Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) The largest of the hard shelled turtles, green turtles derive their name from the green colored fat beneath the carapace, or upper shell. Unlike many other species of turtle, the green sea turtle is herbivorous, eating only plants. They are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. They are currently protected under various environmental treaties, although hunting continues for their meat and eggs, and their ancestral hatcheries are threatened by habitat loss.
